  31.     _What must I do to be saved?_
  32.  
  33.     The answer to this question is so controversial that it has
  34. divided some quarters of evangelical Christianity into warring
  35. factions. The issue involved is the nature of salvation and
  36. saving faith: What _is_ saving faith? What does it mean to
  37. receive Jesus as Lord and Savior? How much must one surrender to
  38. the Lord at the time of salvation? What are the fruits of
  39. repentance?
  40.  
  41.     "Lordship salvation" advocates say that in order to be saved,
  42. one must not only believe and acknowledge that Christ is Lord,
  43. but also submit to His lordship. In other words, there must be --
  44. at the moment one trusts in Christ for salvation -- a
  45. _willingness_ to commit one's life absolutely to the Lord, even
  46. though the actual _practice_ of a committed life may not follow
  47. immediately or completely. Non-lordship proponents argue that
  48. such a pre-salvation commitment to Christ's lordship compromises
  49. salvation by _grace._

  51.     The present debate is largely due to the publication of John
  52. F. MacArthur, Jr.'s _The Gospel According to Jesus_ (Zondervan,
  53. 1988). According to an article by S. Lewis Johnson in the
  54. September 22 edition of _Christianity Today,_ this book has
  55. produced "an explosion of comment, discussion, and feisty
  56. debate." MacArthur, Senior Pastor of Grace Community Church and
  57. president of The Master's Seminary (both in Sun Valley,
  58. California) is a lordship salvation advocate. He wrote his book
  59. in response to (among others) a 1981 book by Zane C. Hodges
  60. entitled _The Gospel Under Siege_ (Redencion Viva). Hodges,
  61. former professor of New Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary,
  62. espouses the non-lordship view, and argues that much evangelical
  63. gospel-preaching is guilty of compromising the grace of the
  64. gospel. Hodges followed MacArthur's book with still another book
  65. entitled _Absolutely Free_ (Zondervan, 1989).

  67.     Another scholar responding to MacArthur's book is Charles C.
  68. Ryrie (of _The Ryrie Study Bible_ fame). Ryrie recently published
  69. _So Great Salvation_ (Victor, 1989) in which he strongly affirms
  70. the non-lordship position. According to Ryrie, the non-lordship
  71. position states that accepting Jesus as Lord does not refer to a
  72. subjective commitment to Christ's lordship in one's life, but
  73. rather a repentance (or changing of one's mind) about one's ideas
  74. of _who Christ is_ (i.e., He is the Sovereign and God) and
  75. exercising faith in Christ. Ryrie argues that repentance from sin
  76. is what _follows_ in the Christian's daily walk with the Lord.

  78.     Much confusion has overshadowed this controversy because of
  79. the lack of precise definitions of key words (although Ryrie does
  80. provide some working definitions in his book). Neither side is
  81. saying that salvation is by works. Both affirm the clear teaching
  82. of Scripture that salvation is a gift freely given by God to man.
  83. Nor is either side advocating "easy-believism," a term coined by
  84. Lordship proponents to describe the idea that one receives
  85. salvation by simply giving intellectual assent to a set of
  86. doctrines.

  88.     The debate will no doubt continue. It is important, however,
  89. that in future discussions of this issue, a clarification between
  90. the _act_ of justification and _process_ of sanctification be
  91. maintained. _Justification_ is the judicial declaration by God
  92. that the believer has a righteous standing before Him. This takes
  93. place the moment a person receives Jesus as his or her Savior by
  94. appropriating Christ's redemptive work on the cross.
  95. _Sanctification_ is the lifelong work of the Holy Spirit which
  96. conforms the believer into the image of Christ.

  98.     Martin Luther once said that "Faith alone justifies, but not
  99. the faith that is alone." "Works," Luther said, "are not taken
  100. into consideration when the question respects justification. But
  101. true faith will no more fail to produce them than the sun can
  102. cease to give light."

  104.     Our responsibility as Christians is to present the claims of
  105. Christ to a lost and dying world. We may rest secure in the fact
  106. that a person's acceptance of the Gospel will result in the fruit
  107. of repentance -- but this is the work of the Holy Spirit, not
  108. man.
